Volksmarching began in Germany during the 1960s. It is a non-competitive walk which can be done as an individual, with a group or as a family. The distance of each sanctioned walk accumulates for the walker leading toward various recognition awards. 
 
The Helen Volksmarch begins at the Festhalle Biergarten and leads you through the trails of Unicoi and Smithgall Woods State Parks. Not only do you get some good exercise, you also get to see some beautiful scenery and may even catch a glimpse of some wildlife.
